During a recent demo, we showed StyleFinder, our inference system that takes a raw author manuscript and transforms it into a fully styled, structured manuscript aligned to a publisher’s specifications.

They were curious. But cautious.

So they asked us to upload a chapter and run it live.

It was not a small file.
Fifty pages.
Three tables.
Four images.
Thirty references.

We uploaded the manuscript and initiated StyleFinder.

A small lock appeared next to the file.

To us, that lock meant one thing.
The system had taken responsibility.

We moved on with the rest of the discussion.

To us, that felt natural.

To them, it did not.

They stopped us.

“How long will it take?”

“Three to five minutes,” we said. “Depending on the elements and the number of concurrent users. You will receive a notification when it completes.”

They were still looking at the screen.

“How do I know it is running? I am not seeing the manuscript.”

They were not questioning the capability.

They were reacting to something else.

The absence of dependence.

We showed them the notifications.
Initiated. Queued. In progress. Completed.

We opened the job dashboard. Every job was visible. Every chapter. Every book. Its exact state.

The system was working.

But it was not asking for attention.

That was unfamiliar.

Then came the question that surprised us.

“How many chapters can one person initiate?”

We paused. Not because we did not know the answer. But because we had never thought of that as a limitation.

“As many as needed.”

“Multiple books?”

“Yes.”

“At the same time?”

“Yes.”

They were searching for the boundary.

There was none in the way they expected.

By then, the notification appeared.

Tagging complete.

We opened the manuscript.

Everything was structured. Styled. Tagged.

No one had watched.
No one had intervened.
No one had waited.

The system had simply accepted the instruction and finished the work.

The conversation changed.

They were no longer evaluating tagging quality.

They were trying to understand how work could continue without them.

So we asked how it worked in their current system.

They answered plainly.

“We start a job. Then we stay there. We watch. We respond if prompts appear. We handle errors if they come up. Only then does it complete.”

Not occasionally.

Every time.

Their system required presence.

Ours required intent.

That was the difference.

Most technology in publishing is built as a tool.
You guide it.
You stay with it.
You supervise it.

A system behaves differently.
You instruct it.
It proceeds.
It finishes.

Automation is not the ability to start a process.

Automation is the ability for the process to continue without you.

If work stops when you do, then technology is not carrying the workload.

People are.

The most revealing moment in that demo was not the speed.

It was the hesitation before they left the screen.

That moment tells you everything.

Because the hardest part of automation is not building the system.

It is trusting it enough to move on.

Welcome to publishing technology.

When Sankar joined us, there was no clear role waiting for him.

Not because he lacked ability.

But because he was an accountant.

Publishing production has long carried an implicit assumption about who belongs. XML experience. EPUB familiarity. Years spent navigating schemas, specifications, and production workflows. Sankar came with none of that. What he brought instead was discipline, attention to detail, and a deep comfort with structured thinking.

So we chose curiosity over certainty.

We trained Sankar to tag manuscripts, not as a shortcut, but as a way to understand whether technology could genuinely support people who were not shaped by traditional publishing paths.

An experiment grounded in trust

We did not begin with small or forgiving content.

Sankar was given monographs of nearly 300 pages. The intention was not speed. It was comprehension. Could the system make the logic of structure visible enough that a motivated person could work confidently within it.

The learning curve was real. Then something shifted.

Once Sankar understood the underlying principles, the work stopped feeling technical and started feeling systematic. Tagging became a matter of recognizing intent and applying structure. Soon, a full monograph could be completed in 30 to 60 minutes.

No prior XML training.

No production background.

Just technology making complexity navigable.

Scale without strain

What followed was not incremental.

Sankar went on to manage a single account that now produces close to 800 books a year using PageMajik. One person coordinating work that would traditionally require multiple specialized roles.

Not through heroic effort.

Through consistency, clarity, and a system that did not fight the user.

That success led us to the next step.

Moving into EPUB production

EPUB production is often where publishing draws a firm boundary. Validation rules, strict requirements, and opaque errors make it a space reserved for specialists.

Sankar did not know EPUB standards. He did not understand the technical language behind many validation messages. What he did have was an EPUB validator that translated those requirements into clear, actionable feedback.

Using it, he resolved validation issues, corrected errors, and ensured delivery timelines were met. The EPUBs shipped as expected. Deadlines were honored. The process remained calm.

At that point, a larger question became unavoidable.

What are we really proud of

Are we proud of Sankar? Without question. He brought focus, accountability, and care to everything he touched.

But the deeper reflection is about what made this possible.

Is this a story about an individual stretching beyond their background?

Or about technology expanding who is allowed to succeed in publishing production?

Because this is not a story about removing skilled roles. It is about removing unnecessary barriers.

Because Someone Has To Do the Boring Work

Every engineering team knows the truth that is rarely spoken aloud. Some work is exciting, and some work is simply necessary. Configuration work usually sits firmly in the second category. It does not energize architects. It does not inspire engineers. It quietly accumulates until a deadline forces someone to build yet another settings page with yet another validation rule and yet another persistence model.

Most platforms eventually gather an assortment of configuration screens, each written at different times by different people with different assumptions. The result is familiar: inconsistent design, repeated logic, fragile user interfaces, and a maintenance burden that expands faster than the platform itself.

We chose a different path.
We decided that boring work deserves a better fate.
More importantly, we decided that engineers should not be the ones doing it.

Instead of writing configuration screens, we built a system that writes them for us. Instead of treating configuration as a repetitive task, we turned it into a declarative capability. Instead of letting boredom drain engineering energy, we transformed it into an architectural advantage.

A single schema became the engine for this transformation.

The Shift From Doing the Work to Defining the Work

A JSON schema now describes everything about a configuration:

The user interface fields

Allowed data types

Validation rules

Storage and versioning behavior

Audit trails and history

Access control rules

Runtime loading semantics

From that one definition, the platform generates:

A polished administrative interface

A validation layer that enforces correctness

A unified persistence engine

Full audit capabilities

Consistent runtime APIs

Preview and testing modes

The schema is no longer a passive file. It is an active participant that constructs the configuration experience on behalf of the engineering team.

This is how one small schema took over our configuration screens.
It did not just automate boring work.
It elevated it.

Turning Boring Work Into Interesting and Meaningful Work

The most compelling benefit of this approach is that it changes the nature of engineering itself. When the framework handles repetitive tasks, engineers are free to spend time on problems that are genuinely complex and impactful.

Instead of writing another form, an engineer can design a new algorithm. Instead of wiring validation for the tenth time, a developer can optimize performance.
Instead of maintaining low level plumbing, a team can focus on innovation.

By converting boring work into automated architecture, we preserve engineering energy for work that advances the platform and enriches the product. This is how we transform necessary tasks into meaningful outcomes. The work still needs to be done, but the system does it. As a result, the people behind the system can do work that matters.

This principle shapes our engineering culture:
Whenever repetitive tasks appear, we look for ways to convert them into systems that are both powerful and elegant. The transformation from boring to meaningful is a deliberate act of design.

A Small Schema With Outsized Impact

The schema eliminated several categories of recurring work:

The need to create configuration screens

Repeated validation logic across modules

Custom storage definitions scattered throughout the codebase

Manual audit tracking

Divergent patterns introduced by different engineers

What remains is simplicity backed by rigor.
The schema holds the intent.
The architecture performs the execution.
The platform receives consistency without additional effort.

We no longer write configuration screens.
We simply define what a configuration should be, and the system takes care of the rest.

Scaling Through Architecture Instead of Team Size

Many organizations assume that increased output requires increased headcount. In practice, it requires increased leverage. A strong architectural foundation amplifies the impact of every engineer.

Our configuration framework serves as a multiplier:

New configurations can be added in minutes

The administrative experience remains cohesive

Validation and governance become standardized

Modules use the same reliable mechanisms

Teams innovate without being slowed by boilerplate work

The platform grows while keeping complexity under control.
The team grows in capability without growing in size. This is the advantage of converting routine engineering work into systems that handle themselves.

A Foundation for Systems That Build Systems

The most exciting part of this framework is what it suggests about the future. A system that generates configuration from a schema is the first step in a broader evolution toward platforms that are largely self constructing.

As more behaviors become declarative, the system takes on a larger share of the assembly process. Engineers define intent. The architecture renders it into reality.

This is not only efficient. It is inspiring. It turns routine definition into meaningful creation and encourages teams to think ambitiously about what the platform can become.

Conclusion

We built this configuration framework because someone had to do the boring work. By assigning that work to the architecture instead of the engineers, we turned a constant burden into a source of leverage, consistency, and creativity.

One small schema changed our relationship with configuration work. It took over tasks that were necessary but uninspiring, and it transformed them into something interesting, meaningful, and architecturally elegant. The system handles the routine. The engineers focus on the exceptional.

This is how modern engineering teams thrive.
This is how meaningful progress happens.
This is how we convert boring work into something far more valuable.

Why Publishers Must Embrace Technology as Facilitators of Knowledge

When I think about the role of a publisher, I have always seen it as that of a facilitator. Publishers, in my view, exist to provide content that disseminates education, develops skills, spreads knowledge, and just as importantly, encourages reading for pleasure.
They are the bridge between creators and learners, between those who have something to share and those eager to learn.

But lately, I have been wondering if publishers, especially in the education space, are truly living up to that role in today’s world of rapid technological change. The publishing ecosystem is transforming week after week, and yet, many publishers seem hesitant, even anxious, about embracing the very tools that could make their job easier and their products far more effective. Let’s explore that hesitation a little more deeply.

The Changing Face of Education Delivery

Today, education is delivered in three distinct formats:

Digital only

Hybrid (Print & Digital)

Print only

These are not just different modes of delivery, they represent entirely different philosophies of engagement. The digital only model represents agility, accessibility, and immediacy.

The hybrid model blends the tactile comfort of print with the flexibility of digital. The print only model, on the other hand, remains rooted in tradition, a space that still holds value, but one that increasingly struggles to keep up with the pace of modern learning.

Now, I understand that not all content is suited to digital or hybrid formats. Some readers and educators still prefer physical books. That’s fine. But what concerns me is the reluctance of publishers, even those working in hybrid or digital models, to truly embrace the technological tools available to them.

The Missed Opportunity in Updating Content

Here’s the irony: updating content has never been easier.

We live in a world where information changes overnight. A new discovery, a new statistic, or a change in curriculum can make yesterday’s content outdated. In the past, that was understandable. Revising a printed book meant reprinting entire batches, a time-consuming and costly process. But in today’s digital or hybrid publishing environment, updates can be made instantaneously. The kind of responsiveness that technology allows, and that readers have come to expect in every other aspect of their lives.

And yet, many publishers hesitate.

They sense the need for quick updates; they even talk about the importance of agility. But when it comes to actually using the tools, whether it’s cloud-based editing platforms, content management systems, or digital publishing software, they pause.

Why?

The Anxiety Behind the Hesitation

I think this hesitation stems from two things: a mindset issue and a lack of comfort with technology.

For decades, publishing has been about control. Control of content, design, and distribution. Once something went to print, it was final. There was a certain pride in that permanence. But in the digital era, content is fluid. It evolves. It can (and should) be changed, refined, and improved over time. That requires a shift in mindset, from being gatekeepers of fixed knowledge to being facilitators of living knowledge.

The second issue is familiarity. Some publishers, particularly in traditional education sectors, are simply not comfortable with the tools. Technology evolves fast, too fast, perhaps.

A new software update, a new workflow platform, or a new distribution model can feel overwhelming. But that’s precisely why publishers need to invest in learning and adopting these systems. The discomfort of learning something new is a small price to pay for the efficiency and responsiveness that technology brings.

The Power of Digital and Hybrid Models

Let’s look again at the two formats where this technological transformation can truly shine: "Digital Only" and "Hybrid".

In both these models, publishers have the ability to:

Instantly correct errors

Update examples, references, and data

Incorporate multimedia elements like videos, simulations, or interactive quizzes

Personalize learning materials for different regions or student groups

All of this can happen in real time. No waiting for the next edition, no massive printing costs, no obsolete inventory. Just live, dynamic content that evolves with the learner’s needs.

And that’s the key point: when publishers use technology effectively, they don’t just make their own work easier, they enhance the user’s experience. The reader, student, or teacher always benefits.

A Call to Publishers: Be Brave with Technology

So, where does this leave us?

If the role of the publisher is truly that of a facilitator, then the greatest act of facilitation today is to embrace technology wholeheartedly. To not just digitize content, but to rethink how knowledge is created, delivered, and updated. To see technology not as a threat to traditional publishing, but as a powerful partner that amplifies its reach and relevance.

Yes, there is anxiety. Yes, change is uncomfortable. But the world of education is moving forward, whether we like it or not. Learners expect immediacy, accuracy, and interactivity.

If publishers don’t step up and adopt these tools, someone else will.

It is time we stopped being hesitant and started being bold. After all, the mission remains the same: to disseminate education, build skills, share knowledge, and inspire reading for pleasure.

The only thing that has changed is the means, and what wonderful means we now have at our disposal!

The Myth of the Master File

“Hi, can you make these changes on Chapter6_final_v3_revisedFINAL_updated.docx?”
If you’ve worked in editorial, design, or production, you’ve received a version of that email. Probably more than once. You squint at the filename, unsure if this is the final version, or someone’s backup of the final version. Meanwhile, the designer is already halfway through typesetting a PDF that’s “final” too—but from three days ago!

Welcome to the myth of the master file. It’s the invisible, often unspoken assumption that somewhere, somehow, someone is holding the correct version of your content. In reality, everyone’s copy is slightly different—and that’s how errors slip through, rework multiplies, and deadlines slip.

The High Cost of Version Chaos

In publishing, the idea of “version control” is often misunderstood as a nice-to-have technical tool. It isn’t. It’s the spine of your entire operation. Without it, every project operates on crossed wires.

You lose track of who approved what. You duplicate changes. You make contradictory edits.
You send the wrong version to press. And no one knows until the damage is done—because there was no clear way to know.

This chaos isn’t just a digital housekeeping issue. It’s a structural risk. It blocks scale. It slows down response cycles. And worst of all, it erodes the trust of the very stakeholders you're trying to serve—teachers, students, boards, parents and the reader.

Fragmented Systems, Fractured Truth

Let’s break down how this dysfunction plays out in real time.

Author feedback comes into to editorial. Editorial pastes those comments into a spreadsheet. The designer, working from a Dropbox link, doesn't know the source file was updated yesterday. Somewhere else, a senior editor has marked up the PDF but forgot to upload it to the shared folder.

Each team is convinced they’re working from the correct source. But no one is—and the file history has become a game of telephone. Eventually, someone merges two versions. But which edits were right? Which were missed? Who double-checked?

This is how errors that were fixed in draft 3 resurface in draft 7. This is how rights teams approve old images. This is how reprints happen with wrong tables. And this is how avoidable mistakes turn into embarrassment.

Each of these lapses adds time, cost, and risk. But because they’re hard to track, they’re rarely budgeted for. And that’s the trap: what feels like a minor inefficiency is actually a compounding operational debt.

It’s Not Just Tech. It’s Culture.

Most publishers assume that better tools will solve the problem. But version control is not just about software. It’s about roles, habits, and accountability.

Everyone believes their version is the final one. And without a shared source of truth, everyone is technically correct—but functionally wrong.

What Good Version Control Actually Looks Like

Let’s set aside product names. Here’s what robust version control looks like in a real publishing environment:

Timestamped changes: Every update is logged and traceable, with who-did-what clarity.

One source of truth: All output formats—PDF, EPUB, digital—derive from the same base file.

Lock-and-review features: Files can’t be accidentally overwritten mid-cycle.

This isn’t hypothetical. Many platforms—some purpose-built for publishing—already offer this. It is important to align teams, defining protocols, and training people to live in this new paradigm.

Stop Searching, Start Auditing

If this sounds familiar, start here. Don’t ask where your files are stored. Ask how your teams use them:

Can you identify the last ten changes made to a chapter in the last 30 days?

Can you trace who made each change and why?

If you had to rebuild that file from scratch tomorrow, would you trust your archive?

If the answer is no, you’re not managing content—you’re gambling with it.

Final Thought: Version Control Is the Product

In publishing, content is king. But without version control, the crown sits on quicksand.
The true product of a publishing house is not the text or the layout—it’s the integrity of the process that got you there.

Until those changes, you’ll always be one version behind. Let’s fix that.

Picture this: it’s the middle of the academic year and social‑media chatter from teachers starts spiking because a single graph on page 37 of your Grade 6 science text is mislabelled.
Anxious parents forward screenshots to principals; a leading state board sends an ultimatum demanding corrections within a fortnight. Somewhere in your headquarters, three editors are frantically comparing — by eye — six different Excel sheets of field feedback, each sheet formatted differently, none of them synced with last month’s author queries. By the time your production team patches the file, the opportunity to respond is delayed.

If that feels uncomfortably plausible, you are already on the wrong side of history.

K‑12 publishing’s risk profile is unlike any other

General trade publishers worry about print runs; journal publishers wrestle with peer review. K‑12 publishers, however, must satisfy five simultaneous feedback streams — state adoption committees, classroom teachers, sales reps, parents, and authors — across as many as 12 grade levels and dozens of local curriculum variants. The cost of missing even one stakeholder’s correction spirals quickly because textbooks are adopted en masse: one error can mean hundreds of thousands of reprints or costly errata slips.

Delays show up in the public eye. In Delhi, government schools were still waiting for mandated free textbooks months into the 2025 session, forcing teachers to photocopy worksheets and bruising publisher reputations in the process. That kind of spotlight is merciless.

Manual feedback loops are a recipe for catastrophe

It is no surprise where the product stays predominantly print, so do the workflows: shared drives, siloed spreadsheets, and endless email threads. In our own consulting work we routinely see:

editors maintaining separate “comment logs” per component,

regional sales managers tracking market notes in CRM exports no one else sees,

authors using their own cloud folders because IT won’t provision external access.

Every duplicated column, every mis‑keyed ISBN multiplies the chance of a market‑shaking error, and the volume of data is exploding.

Time is not on your side

The expectation is near real‑time responsiveness from content partners. When a school sees another publisher push an over‑the‑air chapter update in 24 hours, your two‑month revision cycle looks prehistoric. The bigger danger is invisibility. Your brand should be showcasing tech‑powered agility.

What are the effects of not embracing technology:
Lost adoptions, recall costs, talent drain, compliance costs, brand erosion, escalating support tickets, innovation ceiling. Technology is the antidote — but only if you deploy it now.

Modern document‑ and feedback‑management platforms built for K‑12 publishing can:

Capture every comment at the point of origin and attach it to a single source of truth.

Deduplicate and prioritise via AI‑powered similarity detection, so five teachers flagging the same typo become one task.

Route tasks automatically to editors, designers, or rights teams with SLA clocks that light up red when deadlines slip.

Generate live dashboards that sales, editorial, production, and leadership all view in real time, ending the “whose sheet is right?” debate.

Push updates simultaneously to print PDF, EPUB and interactive platforms, ensuring perfect alignment across formats.

Yes, that sounds like the holy grail — but it is not hypothetical. SaaS solutions already deliver this stack at lower annual cost than one mid‑cycle reprint.

Five steps to cross the chasm before it swallows you:

Map every feedback entry point. Count emails, forms, calls — the uglier the picture, the stronger your business case.

Calculate your true cost of a single correction. Include staff hours, DTP fees, re‑approval costs, and goodwill rebates.

Run a 90‑day pilot on one grade level with a modern feedback‑to‑revision platform. Demand metrics: average turnaround time, error recurrence, stakeholder satisfaction.

Publish internal dashboards. Transparency accelerates adoption; no editor wants their queue glowing red on the weekly ops call.

Scale fast or fall back. If the pilot meets the targets, commit company‑wide before the next adoption cycle. Delay, and you will have to repeat the proof while nimbler rivals surge ahead.

The cliff is closer than it looks

You do not need that frustration by a national spotlight and also imagine your logo in every angry headline. Meanwhile, a competitor’s AI‑curated dashboard shows they closed 92 % of teacher‑reported issues within 48 hours this semester. Which publisher will the school choose next year?

The future will not wait for your comfort zone. Adopting end‑to‑end technology today isn’t just efficiency; it’s survival.

Fail to act, and the future is quite literally not yours. Embrace the tools now, and you’ll own tomorrow’s market instead of feeding on its leftovers.

I share these thoughts not with a sales pitch in mind, but simply to call a spade a spade.
My only stake here is the future success of K-12 publishing — and the hope that it doesn't
fall behind because of inertia.

“Not to ruffle feathers, but because someone has to read the writing on the wall — and help others do the same.”

I intend to write to more on this subject, please do send your views/feedback.

In collaborative publishing environments, it is common for multiple contributors to work simultaneously on different parts of the same chapter. While this parallel authorship boosts productivity, it introduces substantial complexity in file management, version control, and workflow coordination.

Each chapter typically involves a primary author responsible for writing the full manuscript and multiple contributors who add supporting content — such as pedagogical elements or specialized inserts. These may include:

End-of-chapter questions based on key concepts covered in the text

Summaries and learning objectives that reflect the structure of the main narrative

Boxed features like case studies, clinical tips, or thematic sidebars that expand on specific points

Because these contributions depend directly on the author’s manuscript, contributors can only begin their work once the main chapter is available. This ensures that all added material is contextually relevant and accurately aligned.

At the same time, the system allows editorial reviews to begin as soon as any part is ready. There is no requirement to wait for all contributors to submit before the review process can move forward.

The Challenge

Imagine this:

The chapter author submits their manuscript.

One contributor starts drafting end-of-chapter questions immediately and submits early.

Another contributor, responsible for boxed features, takes longer.

Meanwhile, the Editorial Coordinator (EC) wants to send the available content for Development Editor (DE) review.

Without an intelligent system, tracking which parts are ready, who should be notified, and what can be reviewed becomes a tangled manual process. Delays and miscommunications are almost inevitable.

The Solution: Automated Sub-Workflows

Our Contributor Submission workflow was designed to manage this complexity with precision and simplicity:

Role-based access: Contributors receive access only after the chapter manuscript file is finalized and released to them.

Parallel writing workflows: Each contributor works independently, using their own copy of the manuscript, managed through a dedicated sub-workflow.

Smart notifications: Automated emails are triggered when a contributor submits their part or when a stage changes — keeping ECs and reviewers in the loop.

Asynchronous review coordination: As soon as the chapter or any contributor file is submitted, the review process can begin for that content — without waiting for all parts to arrive.

For example:

Contributor 1, tasked with creating multiple-choice questions, finishes early. The system moves their file to “Submitted” and notifies the EC.

The EC forwards the chapter and Contributor 1’s file to DE Review.

Contributor 2 submits later. Their file is automatically added to the DE’s review folder — no rework or manual follow-up needed.

The Result: Precision Without Micromanagement

What makes this system effective is not just the automation — it is the context-aware intelligence. It knows when contributors should begin, tracks who has submitted what, and enables the review process to adapt dynamically.

Why It Matters

For publishers juggling multiple content creators, deadlines, and review cycles, this workflow brings structure without slowing things down. Contributors write when it is contextually appropriate, and editorial reviews can proceed as files become available.

What was once a complex coordination exercise is now a seamless, guided process — benefiting authors, contributors, editors, and reviewers alike.

The ability to swiftly update content based on classroom feedback and adapt core materials for new international markets has become not just a competitive advantage—but a new revenue model.

At PageMajik, we have listened closely to publishers, teachers, and sales teams. We understand the pain points that slow down production cycles, inflate costs, and delay market response.
And we have built a solution that directly addresses these challenges.

With our latest innovations, we are redefining the K–12 publishing workflow, enabling seamless editorial change management and effortless international content customization—all within a unified platform.

The Challenge: A Feedback Loop that Breaks the Workflow

One of the biggest hurdles in educational publishing lies in post-launch feedback. Once books or digital materials are in the hands of teachers and students, real-world use often uncovers areas that need refinement—a confusing image, a mismatch with teaching styles, or cultural nuances that don’t quite correlate.

Members of the Sales team gather valuable feedback from schools, districts, and educators. But traditionally, incorporating these insights has been cumbersome. Multiple systems, manual processes, and long communication loops between editorial, design, and production teams often lead to missed opportunities—or worse, ignored feedback.

This results in:

Delays in updating content

Inconsistent versions across editions or markets

High production costs due to inefficient revisions

Frustration among Authors and lost revenue opportunities

PageMajik’s Breakthrough: Feedback-Driven Publishing Made Easy

Imagine a world where every piece of feedback—whether from a teacher in a classroom in Texas or a curriculum advisor in Nairobi—can be captured, tracked, and acted on in real time.

PageMajik’s intelligent publishing ecosystem makes this a reality.

Our platform is engineered to:

Capture Feedback Instantly: Teachers, sales teams, and internal teams can annotate directly on content—be it text, image, or layout—at any point in the lifecycle. Whether the feedback is a quick edit suggestion, a new pedagogical insight, or a cultural sensitivity concern, it is all recorded in context.

Centralize and Manage Changes: No more email threads or disconnected spreadsheets. Feedback is funnelled into a centralized workspace where editorial teams can view, prioritize, and approve changes within a structured workflow.

Enable Collaborative Editing: Editors, designers, and reviewers can collaborate in real time. Our version control system ensures that changes are tracked, auditable, and reversible—minimizing risk and confusion.

Accelerate Publishing Cycles: With automation tools built into the platform, accepted changes are rapidly incorporated, reviewed, and published—cutting production time drastically and enabling mid-cycle updates.

This is not just about technology—it is about reimagining how content evolves to meet real classroom needs, faster than ever before, across the Globe.

Scaling Globally: Customization for International Markets

In today’s interconnected world, high-quality educational content often starts in one geography—such as the US or the UK—and is then adapted for other regions. But this localization process is traditionally resource-intensive and time-consuming.

PageMajik makes it simple.

Our platform empowers publishers to:

Create Master Editions with Localization Hooks: Content can be structured with embedded placeholders and metadata that enable easy switching of regional references, currency, examples, and even language-level adjustments.

Manage Multiple Versions with Ease: A single source file can power multiple customized editions, each tailored to a specific region, with changes tracked and updated independently while maintaining alignment with the core material.

Reduce Time-to-Market for New Territories: Publishers can launch region-specific editions—be it for Brazil, India, Africa, or beyond—without starting from scratch. Reuse, tweak, and translate content quickly while maintaining brand and pedagogical integrity.

Real Impact: Driving ROI and Educational Outcomes

By enabling rapid, responsive, and regionally relevant publishing, PageMajik helps K–12 publishers do more than just cut costs or save time. We help them:

Stay Competitive: Be the first to respond to classroom needs and curriculum changes.

Improve Adoption Rates: Content that reflects real teacher feedback resonates better with educators, improving market traction.

Expand Globally: Enter new markets with confidence and scalability.

Build Stronger Relationships: When sales reps can tell schools, "Yes, that change can be made—and fast,” it builds lasting trust and credibility.

Why Publishers Are Adopting PageMajik

Our clients tell us that PageMajik has fundamentally changed how they think about publishing. They are not just delivering books—they are delivering living content that grows, adapts, and improves based on real-world usage and feedback.

We believe that publishing should be as dynamic as the classrooms it serves.

If you are a K–12 publisher looking to modernize your workflow, deepen your educator engagement, and scale globally without scaling complexity—PageMajik is your answer.

Let us show you how your team can publish smarter, faster, and further than ever before.

The BETT show 2025 was nothing short of extraordinary. Over the course of three days, I had the privilege of immersing myself in one of the world’s largest education technology (EdTech) events. This annual event brings together educators, policymakers, technologists, and thought leaders from around the globe to explore how education is evolving and how technology is shaping its future.

In this article, I’ll share my key takeaways from the event, explore the challenges and opportunities EdTech presents for India, and extend a heartfelt recommendation for anyone in the education space to mark their calendars for BETT 2026.

The Magnitude of BETT 2025

The scale of BETT 2025 was impressive, as always. Over 35,000 members of the global education community converged at ExCeL, London, creating a buzzing environment of collaboration, innovation, and discovery.

Here are some quick stats that reflect the scale of the event:

600+ exhibitors showcased the latest advancements in EdTech, ranging from interactive learning tools to AI-driven classroom management systems.

400+ world-class speakers, including industry leaders and educators, led thought-provoking discussions.

3,000 students participated, experiencing first-hand the possibilities that technology can bring to the classroom.

Themes That Shaped the Event

As I explored the aisles and attended sessions, three overarching themes resonated throughout the event:

1. The Changing Role of Educators in a Post-COVID World

The global education system is undergoing a significant transformation, accelerated by the pandemic. One critical issue discussed was the shortage of teachers—a challenge limited to not one country but affecting education systems worldwide.

In India, the challenge is not only the shortage of teachers but also the availability of quality educators. EdTech presents an opportunity to bridge this gap by:

reducing the administrative burden on teachers,

enabling teachers to focus more on teaching and mentoring, and

providing tools to enhance teachers' effectiveness in the classroom

2. The Role of EdTech in India – Moving Beyond Print

India remains a print-driven market, and while some schools are open to a hybrid model, the adoption of EdTech is still in its early stages. As I walked through BETT, I couldn’t help but think, "Why can’t classrooms in India benefit from this incredible wealth of technology?"

Key areas where India can leverage EdTech:

Digital tools that support classroom interaction alongside traditional printed materials.

Training for teachers to help them seamlessly integrate technology into their teaching methods.

A shift towards measurable outcomes through data-driven assessments instead of relying on subjective perceptions.

3. Fostering Holistic Education

BETT 2025 didn’t just focus on technology; it also emphasized the importance of holistic education. Some of the most engaging sessions I attended included topics like:

Making AI Work for Schools: Exploring how artificial intelligence can personalize learning experiences and save teachers' valuable time;

Incorporating Digital Skills: Practical strategies to make classrooms more engaging and interactive for students; and

Mental Health of Students: Addressing the emotional well-being of students, which is increasingly critical in today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world.

Aspirations for India – Lessons from BETT 2025

One of the most exciting aspects of attending BETT is the inspiration it sparks. As I interacted with educators and EdTech providers from around the world, I couldn’t help but envision how India could benefit from adopting these innovations.

India’s education system is at a crossroads. With over 260 million students, it is one of the largest systems globally, yet it struggles with:

Teacher shortages

Outdated teaching methods

Limited integration of technology in classrooms

Here’s what India can learn from the BETT show:

Use EdTech to Save Teachers’ Time: Teachers in India often face overwhelming workloads, leaving little time for personalized teaching. Technology can help automate administrative tasks and free up time for teaching.

Focus on Teacher Training: Technology is only as effective as the person using it. Comprehensive training programs for teachers can ensure that EdTech tools are utilized to their full potential.

Evolve Assessment Methods: It’s time to move beyond traditional exams and explore scientific, data-driven assessments that provide a clearer picture of student learning outcomes.

Why Should You Attend BETT 2026?

For those who have never experienced the BETT show, I strongly encourage you to plan a visit to BETT 2026, scheduled for 21st to 26th January 2026, at the same venue in London.

Here’s why it’s worth your time:

Unparalleled Networking: Connect with global educators, policymakers, and innovators. BETT is an opportunity to form partnerships and exchange ideas.

Access to Cutting-Edge Technology: Explore the latest advancements in EdTech and find tools that can transform your institution or classroom.

Inspiration for Change: Whether you are a school leader, teacher, or policymaker, BETT will inspire you to think differently about education.

A Call to Action – Let’s Bring BETT to India!

As someone deeply invested in the future of education in India, I left BETT 2025 with a sense of purpose. The question is no longer, "Should India embrace EdTech?" but rather, "How can we do it effectively and equitably?"

I am eager to collaborate with educators, schools, and policymakers to bring the best of what BETT offers to Indian classrooms. If you are interested in learning more about my experience or how we can work together to revolutionize education in India, feel free to reach out.

Final Thoughts

BETT 2025 was more than just an event; it was a reminder of the boundless possibilities that arise when innovation meets education. The conversations I had, the technologies I saw, and the ideas I encountered left me inspired and hopeful for the future of learning—not just globally, but for India as well.

So, as I look ahead, I would encourage you to join the journey. Together, we can shape the future of education.

When you upload a file online, it feels simple. You click “Upload,” watch a progress bar, and receive a confirmation that the file has been submitted through PageMajik successfully. It seems straightforward and seamless, and that’s exactly the way it should be for the user. However, behind the scenes, a lot is happening to ensure that the process is error-free, secure, and efficient. Let’s delve into the complexity behind a seemingly simple PageMajik author submission and the various validations that make it work flawlessly.

Multiple Scenarios, One Simple User Experience

To better illustrate this complexity, think of it like managing a filing system in a busy office. Imagine you’re responsible for ensuring that every document is in its right place—no duplicates, no missing pages, and everything filed exactly as expected. The system in place works like a diligent office worker, verifying each document, checking for completeness, and ensuring there are no unauthorized additions. This comparison helps illustrate just how much effort goes into ensuring the upload process runs smoothly, with multiple checks happening behind the scenes.

The PageMajik author submission process involves multiple background processes that include complex logical flows to validate each scenario and verifications, all to create a consistent and simple experience for the user.

Here are some of the main scenarios that the backend has to handle:

Upload Count vs. Checkout Count: The system validations if the number of files being submitted through PageMajik matches the number of files checked out by the user. There are multiple possible situations here:

If the upload count matches the checkout count, the system proceeds to the next step smoothly.

If the upload count does not match, additional verification is required.

Filename Verification: Once the files are submitted through PageMajik, the system verifies if the filenames match the ones that were expected:

Matching Filenames: If the filenames match, the system proceeds.

Mismatched Filenames: If there is a mismatch in filenames, the system prompts the user to correct the filenames. This ensures consistency and helps prevent errors during processing.

Handling Additional Files: Sometimes, users may upload extra files:

If the additional files are expected and listed, they are marked for review.

If they are unexpected, the system flags these files to ensure they are handled properly.

Partial Matches and Rejections: There can also be scenarios where some filenames match while others don’t:

Partial Match: In cases where some of the files match, the system may flag these for further verification.

Complete Mismatch: If there is no match at all, the system rejects the upload entirely to prevent data errors.

Verification of New Files: In cases where no files were checked out but new files are submitted through PageMajik, the system flags them for verification. This helps ensure that no unauthorized files are added.

Review and Completion: Any additional files submitted through PageMajik may need to be reviewed before the upload process can be completed successfully. Once all validations pass, the system confirms that the upload is complete.

Since versioning is automatic, it adds a layer of complexity to the backend logic in all scenarios. The system must ensure that each version of a file is properly tracked, managed, and stored without interfering with the integrity of the current upload process. This ensures users always have access to the correct file versions, whether they need to revert to an older version or continue working on the latest one.

The Complexity of Background Processes

Without these background processes, a lot could go wrong—errors in file uploads, file corruption, or even unauthorized files slipping through. The validations in place ensure that each potential issue is addressed before it becomes a problem for the user. This is what makes the process robust and error-free.

Additionally, versioning adds another layer of complexity. The system doesn’t just store different versions—it ensures that the right version is accessible whenever needed, much like keeping different editions of a book in an organized archive while displaying the latest edition prominently. This means that if a user ever needs to revert to an older version, they can do so without issue.

Count Checks ensure that users are uploading the expected number of files.

Filename Verification ensures that files are properly tracked and prevent human error.

Partial Match Handling adds another layer of error prevention by allowing for scenarios where a partial match needs to be addressed.

Review Processes allow the system to catch any inconsistencies before they become larger issues.

All of these validations take place in the backend, entirely invisible to the user, but critical to ensuring a smooth user experience.

Simplicity in the Front End, Complexity in the Backend

PageMajik has taken a design thinking approach to solve this problem, ensuring that the author experience is as simple as possible. By reducing the number of buttons and actions required, PageMajik has streamlined the process and made it intuitive for authors to upload files without hassle. All the complex decisions, versioning, and validations happen in the background, while authors see only the simplicity of a clean interface. This thoughtful design reduces complexity on the front end and makes sure that users can focus on their creative work, not the technicalities.. However, since people are so used to changing filenames to reflect versions or organizing files in subfolders to keep track of different iterations, the simplicity of the PageMajik interface can sometimes feel “too simple.” This deliberate design choice eliminates the need for manual versioning and folder management by automating these processes entirely in the backend. As a result, authors are freed from the cumbersome task of manual tracking and can focus solely on their content.. A good author experience is crucial not only for the author but also for the publisher. A simplified submission process means authors can focus on their content, reducing friction and making the workflow efficient. For publishers, this means fewer errors, more consistency, and smoother overall management of submissions. PageMajik’s commitment to creating an intuitive, easy-to-use submission process ensures that both authors and publishers benefit from an optimized workflow that reduces manual interventions and enhances productivity.

All of this complexity ultimately serves the user. Imagine how cumbersome it would be if you had to manually manage every aspect of your PageMajik author submission—checking counts, verifying filenames, handling unexpected files, and managing versions. Instead, the system takes care of all of these aspects automatically, providing a smooth and effortless experience.

The PageMajik author submission process might seem like a single click and a progress bar, but the effort that goes into making it that simple is significant. The seamlessness is the result of extensive background processes that include complex logical flows to validate each scenario, which are designed to simplify the process for the user while ensuring the backend remains robust and reliable.

This complexity-to-simplicity ratio is a hallmark of good software design. The user is shielded from the intricacies of what’s happening behind the scenes. Instead, they enjoy a clean, error-free experience, thanks to the multiple layers of verification and validations that are happening in the background.

So, the next time you upload a file and see that familiar “Upload Complete” message, remember that what feels simple to you is actually the product of a carefully orchestrated series of processes that work together to make the experience flawless.

Conclusion

Good user experience means making the complex seem simple. The PageMajik author submission system is a perfect example of this. By handling multiple scenarios in the background—from upload count verification to filename matching—the system ensures that what you see as a user is nothing but ease and efficiency. The backend complexity exists to serve one purpose: to make your interaction as seamless and straightforward as possible.

At PageMajik, we treat time the same way—we stretch it and make every second count for our users. We measure time in terms of productivity: how many pages can be proofread in a minute, how many paragraphs are tagged and structured in five minutes, and finally, how long it takes to complete an entire book.

Beating the clock is a challenge we take on every single day.

How do we track all this?

Publishers using our SaaS platform can view detailed, live tracking through the dashboard.

How is this possible?

Introducing the newest addition to our toolset—the Time Sheet module. It monitors and captures time down to every second, every word, and every page. This allows editors to plan and allocate the required time (days or hours) for a project, and then compare it to the actual time spent.

This data can provide insights into the effectiveness of personnel and team collaboration.

If you want to know how much time an editor is spending on a page or chapter, or if you are curious about who is working on which project at a granular level, what do you do now? Poring over detailed spreadsheets, wondering if the information is legitimate, adding up numbers …

If you want to measure your team’s efficiency and accurately assess project costs, PageMajik is here to help.

What can you do with all this information?

You can accurately calculate the cost of a project by tracking the human hours it took to complete. You can also monitor time spent on other tasks like meetings and planning.

I happened to overhear a conversation between two blokes from the publishing industry. Being in the same space myself and confined to an aircraft about to take off, I couldn’t really tune out their rather loud discussion. The gist? They missed the chance to publish a bestseller and were trying to figure out how the manuscript slipped through their fingers and ended up with a lesser-known publisher. Ouch—they must have been hurting.

Well, I thought to myself, if only they had known about PageMajik’s Manuscript Assessment Tool, they would never have faced such a situation.

Intrigued to know more?

At PageMajik, we pride ourselves on staying ahead of the curve. We partner with publishers to help them find solutions. So, donning our thinking caps, our team went on a research mission to discover how manuscripts are assessed and what processes publishers follow when they receive solicited/unsolicited manuscripts.

Our findings were pretty consistent across the board. Manuscripts, especially unsolicited ones, are often left in the hands of fresh interns, working with vague guidelines. You can guess what happens next—many good manuscripts, with the potential to become revenue generators, end up at the bottom of dusty piles, forgotten in a dark corner.

After weeks of extensive research and in-depth conversations with publishers from various genres, our team developed a novel solution, affectionately called MAS.

PageMajik's Manuscript Assessment Tool does exactly what the name implies: it assesses manuscripts based on publishers' criteria and flags anything that deserves more attention. True to our mantra—Work Smart, Save Time—this module achieves just that.

Our smart LLM evaluates thousands of manuscripts in minutes and generates detailed reports for each one, making it easier for editorial teams to take the next steps. For instance, if you're a trade publisher, MAS will evaluate manuscripts in terms of plot development, character and conflict, creativity and originality, readability, and more.

Once this first cut is done, editors can make informed decisions about the next steps. Is the manuscript worth investing more time? If not, a polite letter (automated—yes, our team thinks of everything!) can be sent to the author, so they aren't left wondering, as is often the case. Rarely do authors of unsolicited manuscripts hear back from publishers.

To learn more about this solution, drop an email to sanjita@pagemajik.com.
And if you’re attending the Frankfurt Book Fair this October 2024, stop by the PageMajik stand for a chat. You can find us in Hall 4.0, Stand B70.

As the publishing industry navigates an increasingly digital world, traditional events like book fairs remain invaluable. These gatherings have always been more than just a marketplace for selling books—they are where the future of publishing takes shape. Among the most prominent of these events is the Frankfurt Book Fair, which, in 2024, promises to be more relevant than ever, especially for those looking to explore cutting-edge technologies that are redefining the landscape.

In this digital age, where every second counts and efficiency is critical, publishers need to adapt quickly. One of the key advantages of attending book fairs today lies in the opportunity to learn about and adopt emerging technologies that can streamline processes, save time, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of work. As we look toward the future of publishing, these innovations are not just nice-to-have—they are essential.

Why Book Fairs Matter: More than a Meeting Place

The primary purpose of book fairs has historically been to connect publishers, authors, and booksellers to strike deals and build partnerships. However, today’s book fairs offer much more than networking opportunities. For publishers, they represent a unique chance to gain insights into new trends, especially in the areas of digital transformation and technological advancements.

At a major event like the Frankfurt Book Fair, the emphasis is not only on the books themselves but on the tools that make the production and distribution of books faster, cheaper, and more efficient. Publishers who attend can explore the latest in content management systems, automation tools, and data-driven decision-making platforms.

By embracing these technologies, they can significantly improve their workflow, from editorial to production and distribution.

This is where companies like PageMajik—a key participant in the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024—come into play. Specializing in content workflow automation, PageMajik exemplifies how emerging technologies can revolutionize the publishing process. By visiting their stand, publishers can learn how tools like these can save time, reduce workload, and cut costs—crucial factors in an industry where margins are tight and speed-to-market is critical.

Emerging Technologies: Reducing Time, Workload, and Costs

One of the most significant challenges publishers face today is managing the sheer volume of tasks in their day-to-day operations. From editing and proofreading to typesetting and distribution, the publishing process is often tedious and time-consuming. However, emerging technologies are increasingly stepping in to ease this burden.

Platforms like PageMajik use automation and AI to streamline several key tasks in the publishing workflow. For example, their automated content management system can handle everything from file organization to editorial reviews, dramatically reducing the amount of manual work required. By automating repetitive tasks, such as formatting, publishers can focus their time and resources on more value-adding activities—such as content strategy and marketing. This is a clear example of how technology is shifting the paradigm, making it easier for publishers to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.

Moreover, these technologies often come with data analytics features that allow publishers to make more informed decisions about which projects to pursue, which markets to target, and how to price their books effectively. As we look to the future, data will play an increasingly important role in decision-making, helping publishers optimize their operations and make strategic choices that can enhance profitability.

By reducing the time and labour required to manage projects, technologies like these also help cut costs—a critical concern for publishers in an industry where budgets are often stretched thin. By attending the Frankfurt Book Fair, publishers have the chance to see firsthand how these tools work and how they can be integrated into their existing operations.

A Futuristic View of the Publishing Ecosystem

The future of publishing will likely be marked by even a greater integration of digital tools, creating a more efficient, interconnected, and data-driven industry. One can imagine a scenario where AI-driven platforms not only manage editorial workflows but also predict future bestsellers based on historical data, audience analysis, and market trends. These technologies could guide every aspect of the publishing process, from acquisition and editorial to marketing and distribution.

Blockchain technology, for instance, could be used to ensure transparency in royalty payments and protect intellectual property, while augmented reality (AR) could transform how books are consumed by integrating interactive elements into the reading experience. Furthermore, the use of machine learning could help publishers personalize content at scale, tailoring books and marketing campaigns to individual readers based on their preferences and past behaviors.

By embracing these innovations, publishers can not only stay competitive in an increasingly crowded market but also unlock new possibilities for creativity and growth. This is why book fairs are so important—they offer a glimpse into what’s possible and provide the tools and knowledge needed to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

The Role of Time: Efficiency is Key

As publishers look to the future, one of the most valuable commodities they can gain is time. Time saved is not just a reduction in costs—it’s an opportunity to produce more, innovate faster, and engage more deeply with audiences. Emerging technologies are playing a central role in reducing the time it takes to bring a book from manuscript to market.

Take, for example, the editing process. Tools like those offered by PageMajik allow for faster turnaround times by automating mundane tasks such as version control and file management. Instead of spending hours on manually sifting through multiple document versions or formatting manuscripts, editors can use these tools to quickly navigate the different stages of the editorial process, freeing up time for more critical tasks.

In addition, by cutting down on the need for repetitive tasks, such technologies also allow smaller publishing houses with limited staff to compete with larger players. The time-saving benefits of automation, in this case, translate directly to increased capacity and output—without the need for significant increases in manpower.

Conclusion: Why Publishers Should Attend the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024

For publishers, attending the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024 is more than just an opportunity to buy and sell books. It’s a chance to explore the latest innovations in technology that can help them save time, reduce workload, and cut costs—all while gaining a glimpse into the future of the publishing ecosystem.

Technologies like those offered by PageMajik are at the forefront of this transformation, providing publishers with the tools they need to stay ahead of the competition.
By embracing these advancements, publishers can not only streamline their processes but also ensure that they remain relevant in an increasingly digital world.

Visiting PageMajik’s Stand (Hall 4.0/B 70) at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024 will provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about how content automation and other emerging technologies can help publishers thrive in this evolving landscape.

After all, the future of publishing is not just about producing books—it’s about producing them better, faster, and smarter.

In the swiftly moving world of publishing, where the precision of words holds immense significance, one could easily assume that every meticulous detail is carefully managed. However, amidst the flurry of deadlines and revisions, one critical aspect often slips through the cracks: version control. This seemingly mundane task, often relegated to the shadows, emerges as the unsung hero of publishing. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it forms the cornerstone upon which the integrity and coherence of published works are built.

Version control, essentially, entails the systematic management of changes to documents or files. It allows publishers to track alterations, revert to previous versions if necessary, and collaborate seamlessly across teams. Yet, despite its indispensable role, it is frequently sidelined or disregarded altogether. This negligence is not merely inconvenient; it poses significant risks to the quality, accuracy, and credibility of published material.

At the heart of version control lies the preservation of authenticity. In an era rampant with misinformation and fake news, ensuring the integrity of published content is paramount. Without robust version control mechanisms in place, the risk of errors, discrepancies, or unauthorized modifications escalates exponentially. Picture a scholarly journal where amendments to research findings go unnoticed or a news article that inadvertently distorts facts due to unchecked revisions. The repercussions are not only detrimental to the publisher's reputation but also erode public trust in the reliability of information sources.

Moreover, version control is indispensable in safeguarding against inadvertent errors or omissions. In the frenetic rush to meet deadlines, it is all too easy for typos to slip through the cracks or for crucial edits to be lost in the shuffle. Without a comprehensive version control system, identifying and rectifying such blunders becomes an arduous and time-consuming endeavor. This not only prolongs the publication process but also increases the likelihood of inaccuracies going undetected, tarnishing the credibility of the published work.

Furthermore, version control is instrumental in facilitating seamless collaboration among publishing teams. In an industry characterized by distributed workflows and cross-functional teams, effective communication and coordination are paramount. Version control platforms provide a centralized repository where contributors can access, edit, and review documents in real time. This not only streamlines the editorial process but also minimizes the risk of conflicting revisions or duplicated efforts. By fostering collaboration and transparency, version control empowers publishing teams to deliver high-quality content efficiently and cohesively.

Beyond its immediate benefits, version control also holds profound implications for long-term archival and access. In an increasingly digital landscape, the ability to preserve and retrieve historical versions of documents is invaluable. Version control systems serve as a digital trail, chronicling the evolution of published works over time. This archival functionality not only facilitates compliance with regulatory requirements but also enables researchers, historians, and future generations to trace the lineage of ideas and scholarship with precision and accuracy.

In light of these compelling arguments, it is evident that version control is not a trivial or optional component of the publishing process; it is a fundamental pillar upon which the entire edifice rests. Its significance transcends mere convenience or efficiency; it is a safeguard against errors, a bulwark of authenticity, and a catalyst for collaboration. Publishers must recognize the imperative of prioritizing version control and invest in robust systems and protocols to uphold the integrity and credibility of their publications.

To neglect version control is to court disaster—a perilous gamble with the reputation and trust of both publishers and readers alike. In an era where information is currency and accuracy is non-negotiable, the importance of version control cannot be overstated. It is not merely a task to be checked off a list but a guiding principle that underpins the very essence of publishing excellence.

It is time for publishers to heed the clarion call and accord version control the reverence and attention it rightfully deserves.

The integrity of publishing depends on it.

The question that is being asked is whether digital technology has impacted the publishing industry. Positive impact or otherwise. It is yet to be confirmed or determined whether print books are on a decline and whether digital books are on a growth trajectory. There is no deep dived research paper on this. Having said that, it differs from market to market, meaning different countries and also the genre of publishing; K-12, Higher-Ed, Academic, Fiction, Non-fiction, and many more. It is not at a point where one size fits all.

More and more stakeholders in the publishing industry are looking at ways of managing this integration process, which is complex. Why is it complex? Let us look at four clear paths in the publishing ecosystem.

Writer/Author: We can call them creators. There is traditional writing and now there is assisted writing with the help of generative AI. Surely there is a positive side and flipside to this. Moving on …

Publisher: We can call them curators. This team puts in a lot of effort in editing, copyediting, proofreading, designing, indexing and many more such project related functions to make the content elegant and readable. I observe that many companies are wasting a lot of their time by not embracing current technology, which is available as a ready-to-buy option. My research estimates shows that what could be achieved and delivered in less than 12 hours is now a labored effort spanning 2 to 4 weeks. I have had conversations with many such companies, and have found a resistance to change; they are unwilling to give up their current inefficient systems and adopt technology.

The curators have to come out of their cocoons, embrace new technology and become efficient and bring in more accuracy in their publishing processes.

What next after this?

Distribution, which is the most important function in the lifecycle. This has undergone significant changes, and many are unable to understand or foresee the massive evolution taking place in the models of distribution. I began listing the avenues available for publishers and the list was so lengthy that I decided to not list them. Yes, the traditional book shop is still there lurking, but the models, platforms and opportunity have grown immensely both in physical and digital. We should no longer be talking about current systems, which has been the major reason for the disruption of supply chain in the publishing sector.

Finally, Monetisation. This is very complex. However, publishers must study this carefully since the new monetisation avenues are bringing the cash back to the publishers faster than the traditional approach of waiting for a period ranging from 90 to 210 days. There are many platforms that have opened this opportunity for Publishers. Medium and Large publishers can thrive and grow with this new medium but smaller publisher may have affordability issues.

To conclude, the Publishing industry is not about simply digitizing paper content but it is about forcing businesses to adapt their processes and products to accommodate and reach the new customer. Automation is the key.

There is an urgent need for publishers to examine all their systems and evolve to a more efficient way of handling their business. Evaluating a manuscript, applying technology in the editorial and production process, supply chain management, streamlining and accelerating the monetisation, and many more, can be managed by? Should I say algorithms?

The market is showing an up-tick in content in genres such as young adult, romance, fantasy, mystery, thriller, historical fiction, science fiction, self-help, to name a few. You have to embrace technology. Content is not regarded as data by the author and the publisher, but it is data for those who drive this via tech.

Human hand/intervention cannot be done away with. But there is a call to minimize it to be efficient and cost-effective, which results in better profits and more!!

Understanding the Problem

What’s the Issue?

In the publishing industry, applying styles to a manuscript based on a specific design can be challenging. You need to remember where to apply each style, such as headings, text, lists in special boxes like Case Studies, and the first and last paragraphs in a list.

Why is it Important?

Applying the correct style is crucial for producing the right output. But it’s easy to forget all the styles for a book, and this can lead to errors. We need an efficient solution.

PageMajik’s Solution

The Idea: Auto-prefixing and Auto-applying Style

PageMajik’s solution is to let users apply styles as they recognize them, without having to remember all their house styles. For special boxes, users can apply the same style as they do for normal text, and then apply a group style. This removes the need to remember the style for special boxes.

How it Works

PageMajik’s solution identifies the first and last paragraph within any list and applies a specific style before/after a specific paragraph. This removes the manual work that would have otherwise been necessary.

Example

Let’s say you have a paragraph style called “Para1” and another paragraph style called “Para2”. You wish to apply a specific style to “Para2” when it is either above or below “Para1”.

In PageMajik, you can define this auto-style structure in the InDesign template as: <Para1>=<Para2>=<above/below>=<ReplacementStyle>.

When generating InDesign, PageMajik will automatically apply the “ReplacementStyle” to “Para2” when it is in the specified position relative to “Para1”. This eliminates the manual work of applying the style each time.

Time Analysis

With the traditional method of tagging styles, it would take approximately an additional 5 minutes per chapter. However, with PageMajik’s innovative approach of auto-prefixing and auto-applying styles, this time is now yours! Meaning - you can focus more on the content and less on the technical aspects of applying styles, and your process becomes more efficient and user-friendly.

Resources Used

This innovative solution was the result of a collaborative effort among several teams - XSLT scripting, InDesign automation, and Testing. The combined skills and dedication of these teams have made this significant advancement possible, further enhancing user experience and improving efficiency in the publishing process.

Tools Used

PageMajik uses a predefined structure within the InDesign template for the configuration of auto-styles. On the roadmap is a transition to a more user-friendly interface.

Overcoming Challenges

Technical Challenges

Implementing this solution was not easy, but PageMajik managed it without overloading InDesign. We used XSLT to identify/markup elements that belonged to a group and InDesign automation scripts to apply styles automatically.

User Challenges

While the solution takes care of remembering and applying the style, users still need to apply the correct group style and paragraph style.

Usability: Simplifying the User Journey

The usability of “Auto-prefixing and auto-applying style when generating InDesign” is a significant factor in its success. The system is designed with the user in mind, ensuring that the process of applying styles is as straightforward and intuitive as possible.

Impact of the Solution

Who Benefits?

The individuals responsible for styling the document will greatly benefit from this solution. With PageMajik’s system, they no longer have to recall all the styles. The solution prefixes and automatically applies a group style, making their task significantly easier and more efficient.

Case Study

In this section, we will delve into a case study that demonstrates the time it took to apply styles before and after implementing our solution.

Before the Solution

Before implementing our auto-prefixing and auto-applying style solution, the process of manually tagging the headings and texts for boxes, identifying list items, and applying specific tags to remove additional vertical space in the output was quite time-consuming. It took approximately four minutes to complete these tasks for each chapter.

After the Solution

With the introduction of PageMajik’s innovative solution, the time previously spent on manually tagging these specifics is no longer required. This time is now saved, allowing users to focus more on the content and less on the technical aspects of applying styles. This makes the process more efficient and user-friendly.

Impact Assessment

Quantifying the Benefits of Our Solution

Since the implementation of PageMajik’s auto-prefixing and auto-applying style solution, we’ve seen a significant increase in efficiency across the publishing industry. While it’s difficult to quantify the exact number of individuals who have benefited from this solution, the impact is evident in the time saved and the reduction in errors during the style application process.

Publishers, editors, and designers who previously spent considerable time manually applying styles can now focus more on the creative and content aspects of their work. This not only enhances productivity but also improves the overall quality of the published material.

The positive feedback we’ve received from our users further underscores the effectiveness of our solution. We’re proud to say that our innovative approach has made a significant difference in simplifying the style application process in InDesign, contributing to a more efficient and user-friendly publishing workflow.

Conclusion: Looking Ahead

Auto-prefixing and auto-applying style in InDesign is a powerful solution to the problem of remembering and applying style based on design. By understanding the problem and using innovative approaches, we can make the future of the publishing industry brighter.

ChatGPT is a large language model that can be used to assist with various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, including content creation, content moderation, and parsing.

Creation, Moderation and Parsing of Content

Content Creation: ChatGPT can be used to generate text based on a provided prompt or topic. For example, you can provide a prompt such as "write a short story about a detective solving a murder case" and the model will generate a coherent story that follows that prompt. Additionally, ChatGPT can also be fine-tuned on a specific dataset or style of language to ensure that the generated text is consistent with the desired style.

Content Moderation: ChatGPT can assist with content moderation by identifying and flagging potentially inappropriate or offensive language. By training the model on a dataset of texts that contains examples of inappropriate or offensive language, ChatGPT can learn to recognize and flag similar language in new text.

Content Parsing: ChatGPT can assist with content parsing by analyzing and extracting relevant information from a block of text. For example, you can use the model to extract specific entities such as names, dates, or locations from a news article. Additionally, the model can also be fine-tuned on a specific dataset to improve its ability to understand and extract information from that particular type of text.

The model can be fine-tuned on specific datasets to improve its performance on those tasks. Pre-processing techniques can be applied to make the input more consistent and understandable to the model.

Manual copyedit vs. AI-assisted copyedit

Manual copyediting is the process of reviewing and correcting written text to ensure that it is clear, accurate, and consistent in terms of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style. This is typically done by a human editor, who will read through the text and make any necessary changes.

AI-assisted copyediting, on the other hand, uses NLP and machine learning techniques to automatically check and correct text for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style. ChatGPT can play a role in this by providing the underlying NLP capabilities that power the AI-assisted copyediting process. ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a specific dataset of text and style, and can be used to detect and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, and style in new text. It can also be used to identify inconsistencies in the text and suggest alternative phrasing to improve the consistency of the text.

While AI-assisted copyediting can be a useful tool for quickly identifying and correcting errors, it is not a substitute for manual copyediting. AI-assisted copyediting can help to identify errors and inconsistencies in text, but it is not capable of understanding the nuances of meaning and style that a human editor can.

Consistency in Content

Consistency is important in books because it helps to create a cohesive and believable story, and it also helps to maintain the reader's engagement and understanding of the story. Inconsistencies can cause confusion and disrupt the flow of the story, making it difficult for readers to fully immerse themselves in the narrative.

ChatGPT can be used to maintain consistency in content by being fine-tuned on a specific dataset of the book's style and language. This can help the model to understand the author's tone, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Once fine-tuned, ChatGPT can be used to generate new text that is consistent with the style and tone of the book, or to check the consistency of existing text by comparing it to the fine-tuned model's understanding of the book's style and language. Additionally, you can use pre-processing techniques like removing irrelevant information, expanding acronyms, or converting numbers to word format, to make the input more consistent before giving it to the model.

While ChatGPT is an advanced model, it's worth noting that the performance of these tasks will depend on the quality and quantity of the training data, and the specific implementation of the model. Pre-processing techniques like cleaning and normalizing the input text can also help to improve the results.

Copyediting is the process of checking for mistakes, inconsistencies, and repetition in a manuscript before it’s published. This is an important step to ensure that the final product is polished and error-free. One of the challenges in copyediting a book is that the same errors may occur multiple times throughout the manuscript, thereby making the process time-consuming and confusing.

Consistency in writing, and why it is important

Maintaining consistency while copyediting a book can be a difficult task. A book is usually made up of multiple chapters, written by different authors, or written at different times. Each chapter may have its own style, tone, and language usage. Keeping all of these elements consistent throughout the book can be challenging. For example, if a book uses British English spelling in one chapter and American English spelling in another, it can be difficult to ensure consistency across the entire book. Similarly, if a book uses a specific terminology or phrase in one chapter and then uses a different term or phrase in another chapter, it can create confusion for the reader. Additionally, if the book has multiple characters, it’s essential to keep their characteristics, dialogue, and speech patterns consistent throughout the book.

Consistency is important in copyediting because it helps to create a sense of coherence and unity in the book. It ensures that the book’s style, tone, and language usage are consistent throughout, which makes it easier for the reader to understand and engage with the story. Inconsistencies can cause confusion for the reader, which can be detrimental to their enjoyment of the book.

For example, imagine reading a book where a character’s name is spelled differently in different chapters. In one chapter, the character’s name is spelled “Mike” and in another chapter, it’s spelled “Michael.” This inconsistency can cause confusion for the reader, making it difficult to keep track of the characters and follow the story. Similarly, if a book uses different units of measurement in different chapters, it can be confusing for the reader to understand the context of the story.

Inconsistencies can occur in any genre of writing, whether it is STEM or Humanities, and can have a negative impact on the reader’s experience. In STEM, inconsistencies in technical terms and units of measurement can be particularly confusing for readers. For example, if a scientific paper uses metric units in one section and imperial units in another, it can be difficult for readers to understand the context and make comparisons. Similarly, if a technical manual uses different terms to refer to the same component, it can cause confusion for readers trying to follow the instructions. In the Humanities, inconsistencies in style, tone, and language usage can be particularly challenging. For example, a historical fiction novel that switches between different time periods and perspectives may use different styles of language and tone, which can be confusing for readers. Similarly, if a non-fiction book on philosophy uses different terms to refer to the same concept, it can be difficult for readers to understand the author’s arguments.

It’s crucial for copyeditors to catch the inconsistencies and make sure that they are fixed, regardless of the genre. It’s a time-consuming process that requires attention to detail and a deep understanding of the book’s style and tone. PageMajik makes this process manageable by identifying the inconsistencies across the book and allowing the editor to fix these in a single place. By using AI, the software is able to identify all errors in the chapters and store that information in a single place. When you’re reviewing a chapter, the software will use AI to find any errors that appear across the book. These errors are displayed in a user-friendly manner, allowing you to make decisions without confusion. This means that you won’t have to solve the same errors multiple times, saving you time and effort.

Why should Publishers opt for PageMajik?

Publishers should consider buying a software like PageMajik that addresses inconsistencies for several reasons.

Firstly, it saves time and effort. PageMajik allows you to identify and resolve errors in a single location, rather than having to go through each chapter individually.

Secondly, it improves the quality of the final product. By identifying and resolving inconsistencies, PageMajik helps ensure that the final product is polished and error-free, which improves the quality of the book and increases reader satisfaction.

Thirdly, it helps save on costs. By identifying and resolving inconsistencies early in the process, PageMajik helps avoid costly errors and reprints.

Lastly, it can increase revenue. A well-edited book with fewer inconsistencies is more likely to be well-received by the readers and this in turn can increase the sales of the book and help the publisher build a positive reputation in the market.

What are the key differentiators?

PageMajik’s AI-based approach and the ability to review and make decisions on errors across a book in a single place make it more efficient and accurate than other competitive products in the market.

A key differentiator is that PageMajik is tailored to identifying and resolving inconsistencies across a book, whereas X software may not be as focused on this specific task.

PageMajik uses AI to identify and resolve inconsistencies and is therefore more efficient and accurate.

Additionally, PageMajik allows you to review and make decisions on errors across a book in a single place, whereas X software may not have this capability.

In conclusion, PageMajik offers a unique set of features and capabilities that can be beneficial for publishers of any genre of content. It helps you save time and effort, improve the quality of the final product, save cost, and increase revenue.

The digital revolution has transformed the way the world transacts today. Be it communication, shopping, or watching movies, handy devices like the mobile phone or the computer enable users to access it all at the touch of a button.

Reading is no different. Though for the connoisseur, the traditional physical book is still an essential part of daily life, accessing books on the digital platform opens the world even wider! Yes, digital publishing platforms have transformed book publishing and reading in many ways.

A digital publishing platform allows content of any length to be published in a digital format for consumption by readers on their mobile, tablet, Kindle, smartphone, or laptop, and turn pages without having to. Digital publishing is different from the digitizing of books. When you digitize a book, it means scanning an existing physical book and creating a PDF of the scanned pages. It retains the look and feel of the book and readers can scroll to read.

But this has many limitations. It cannot be bookmarked or turned, and it may not provide a very satisfying reading experience.

Digital publishing, on the other hand, provides a whole new experience to the reader, empowering publishers to experiment with the format at a much lower cost. The pandemic further accelerated the shift to digital books due to closures and lockdowns. The global book publishing industry’s market size experienced an annual decline of 1.1% CAGR between 2016 and 2021. However, the CAGR for the global digital publishing market was 9%, with the industry growing from $51.06 billion in 2020 to $56.09 billion in 2021.

6 Reasons Why Digital Publishing Is Popular?

With the world opening up after the Covid-19 pandemic, the book publishing market is slowly picking up, but digital publishing has also gained a strong foothold. Some of the reasons for its growing popularity even among publishers include:

1. Greater Interactivity: Book reading has been a one-way affair in the traditional world. But today, viewers can comment and interact with each other and even the author on the digital platform. This increases reader engagement and also helps publishers and authors understand their readers better.
2. Shorter Time-to-Market: Digital tools shorten the book publishing lifecycle. They help to automate the manuscript submission, review, editing, and publishing processes to a large extent by aiding editors to be on top of the project with updates, alerts, collaboration, and communication tools.

3. Wider Reach: With high mobile phone penetration, it is easier to reach out to prospective readers without boundaries. Digital distribution allows publishers to make the books available online for anyone to access from anywhere.

4. Lower Costs: Reaching out to a wider audience earlier meant huge costs and time delays. Today, with digital publishing platforms, there are no cost or time barriers.

5. Insights-Driven Publishing: Book publishing has always been a matter of hit or miss. Publishers would use their gut feel to assess reader interest in topics and genres. But with digital publishing platforms, they can base their decisions on data such as sales, revenues, and even reviews and chatter. These can provide insights and reveal patterns hitherto hidden, helping with decisions on what to publish and where to distribute.

6. Targeted Campaigns: Book reading is a matter of taste in the case of novels and self-help books or a matter of necessity in the case of textbooks or academic publications. While the market for niche publications may be fairly obvious, for the more generic works, a targeted marketing campaign can improve sales and expand reach.

Reduced physical storage space and enabling ecological conservation by reducing paper consumption are some of the other benefits of digital publishing. But for the digital publication to become popular, it should still not compromise on content, quality of design, ease of navigation, attractive cover, attractive pricing, and interactivity.
